How to play Backgammon

Try Backgammon at your own pace and keep its objective in view. Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Local two players; no doubling cube, stakes or remote matching.

Notice the feedback

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Read that aim before choosing your first action. The example below illustrates a decision.

Step by step

  1. Roll and use the maximum legal number of dice; doubles give four moves.
  2. Enter barred pieces first.
  3. Points with at least two enemies are blocked; a lone enemy is hit.
  4. Bear off only after all pieces reach home.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

A useful example

When only one die can be used and either is individually playable, use the larger die. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Read the matching step again.

Watch out for this

An oversized bear-off requires no piece farther from the exit. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
