How to play Tangram

Bring your attention to one round of Tangram. Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Look at what changes after your first action.

Arrange seven pieces into the square target. Rotate or flip a piece to fit; this game currently offers one target shape.

Build a steady rhythm

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Take a moment to understand the current position.

Step by step

  1. Drag a selected piece.
  2. Rotate in 45-degree steps or flip it.
  3. Use snapping for precise alignment.
  4. Check the layout or use one-piece assistance.

Controls

Mouse/touch dragging and rotate/flip buttons. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

A useful example

The parallelogram may need flipping rather than rotation. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

Overlaps do not count as filling the target. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
